Long Weekend Nutrition Tips

How To Keep Your Nutrition On Track

 This Long Weekend

With Victoria Day weekend upon us, there is bound to be a lot of time spent with friends, family, and food. At AIM Fitness, we definitely think it's OK to indulge in our favourite treats every once in a while, as long as it truly is every once in a while! The problem is that despite our best intentions (yes, we struggle with it too), 'every once in a while' can easily become every few days. Long weekends, birthdays, work occasions (at our trainer Heidi's old workplace they had cake once a month for all the birthdays in that month), baby showers, etc. usually all involve food and for a lot of us these events occur way more frequently than is helpful to eating a healthy diet. So we've come up with three tips to help you stay on track at these events, read on to hear some of the strategies we use to ensure we don't overindulge too often!

1) Don't go hungry.

Eat a nutritious meal before you attend an event or gathering. If you are full from something healthy that you ate beforehand you won't be starving and eat the unhealthy things as impulsively. If it's at work during lunch hour we suggest eating a healthy packed lunch before eating something from the spread.

2) Go with a plan.

The last time our trainer Heidi attended a baby shower she decided before she got there to choose 2 treat items to eat and that everything else she ate would be from the fruit and veggie platter (and without any dip). She also chose in advance that she would not drink her calories. She chose to stick to water instead of punch. Going in with a plan helped Heidi be more mindful of what went on her plate and therefore ultimately what went into her mouth!

3) Offer to bring something (and make it healthy).

Another challenge can be that there are no healthy options offered. A great way to combat this is to offer to bring something! That way you have some control over what is there - not to mention the host or party planner will be very grateful.

These are some AIM Fit Tips for staying on track with nutrition at Victoria Day Weekend Parties, Birthdays, Showers and more! Let us know if you have any more tips, we'd love to hear from you!
